Two talented tattoo artists share their Austin ink stories, along with their fave spots to eat, drink and jam.

Moms Tattoos Exterior

Deb Obregon, aka Mom from South Austin’s Mom’s Tattoos, has been tattooing locals and visitors for more than 20 years. Here’s what makes her tick, on and off the clock.

What’s the most common local tattoo?
"We are well known for tattooing many of Austin's favorite local landmarks. The "Hi, how are you?" frog, the bat statue, and the beautiful Virgin of Guadalupe are just a few that have become permanent souvenirs thanks to us. The capitol building is also popular."

What’s the best Austin-centric tattoo you’ve done?
"My personal favorite to tattoo is the bluebonnet! I love flowers and Texas wildflowers are the best."

What are your favorite Austin spots to eat, drink and see music?
"Being a South Austin original, we all like to shop local. We love to eat at Brown's Bar-B-Que, P. Terry's and the Roaring Fork. When we are not busy slinging ink, you can find us at Alamo Drafthouse watching movies or over at Barton Springs soaking up sunshine. "

What do you love most about your city?
"Friendly, caring folks and activities for all ages are some of the reasons we love Austin."

Erik Axel Brunt of Triple Crown Tattoo Parlour

Triple Crown Tattoo Parlour’s Erik Axel Brunt loves his city, his tattoo gun, kicking butt and having fun.

What’s the best Austin-centric tattoo you’ve done?
"A fun Austin-centric style tattoo that I've done was an armadillo with bright candy-colored wings on a young couple. They liked the idea of a flying armadillo, and that keeps Austin weird in fun tattoo form."

What’s the most common local tattoo?
"The most common tattoo done is usually a simple outline of the Texas state. Tourists and locals alike all seem to get these token tattoos."

What are your favorite Austin spots to eat, drink and see music?
"If I’m not working, I typically hangout on the east side of town where the tattoo shop is located. I always enjoy ADP (Austin Daily Press) for a fresh meal. They're a sandwich shop that does all of the menu in taco or salad form so it works for the basic eater's preferences. I don't drink, but I do on occasion go to Badlands since I have friends that are in bands, and they perform there fairly often. "

In my down time I train mixed martial arts, so when friends are with me, we will go to Atomic Athlete to partake in some well engineered strength and conditioning training, or Gracie Humaitá Austin to roll around on the mats practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and also Austin Kickboxing Academy for some Muay Thai fun.

What do you love most about your city?
"The thing that I love about this fine city is that no matter your interests or lifestyle, the city has it all. Eating healthy is a big priority of mine, and Austin excels in that department. Outdoor activities, indoor fun, music, social events, and a happening night life – it's all here!"
