The 29th annual AIDS Walk Austin by AIDS Services of Austin (ASA) and presenting sponsor Gilead returns on Sunday, October 16 for a day full of live music, food, and entertainment to raise funds and awareness for 11 local HIV and AIDS advocacy organizations, including AIDS Services of Austin. Austin-based singer-songwriter and former semifinalist of NBC’s The Voice, Nakia, will lead this year’s walk as the 2016 Honorary Chair. Afterward, Nakia will join his band Nakia and the Blues Grifters to close out the walk with a live, headlining performance. Chris Saldaña, anchor of CBS Austin This Morning, will return as the guest emcee.

ASA is the largest HIV and AIDS service organization in Central Texas working to enhance the health and well-being of the community and individuals affected by HIV and AIDS. Produced by ASA, the walk aims to raise funds to directly support education and prevention of HIV and AIDS, with 83 percent of funds raised going to services in Austin. Last year’s event raised more than $227,000 for 11 HIV and AIDS agencies across Austin, and this year AIDS Walk Austin aims to raise $240,000.

Registration and activities begin at 11 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Palm Park, located at the South I-35 frontage road and East 3rd Street. Participants can enjoy festivities at the park including bites from local food trucks and a headlining performance from Nakia and the Blues Grifters with opening acts to be announced. The community is invited to gather in the park and enjoy the musical acts. The event will culminate in a 2.75-mile walk routing through downtown and ending at Palm Park.

Participants can register as individuals or groups and will receive an AIDS Walk Austin t-shirt with an encouraged donation of $20 per person. Volunteer opportunities are also available, and interested groups or individuals can sign up at aidswalkaustin.org. Dogs on a leash are welcome to participate in the walk as well.

There is no charge for parking at the street meters surrounding Palm Park on Sundays. Participants are also encouraged to use CapMetro services, ridesharing, carpool with friends, or bike to the park. Bike racks will be available.
