Lawyers play a critical role in the struggle for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people’s civil rights. Recognition of LGBT people’s rights to live openly, marry and raise children, and live and work in the same places as everyone else has always required lawyers to secure these rights through the courts and legislative bodies. In whatever ways these rights are not yet completely secure, new lawyers must be trained to continue these legal battles until LGBT people are completely equal in American society.

Because of this history and continued need for lawyers to undertake these legal battles, the Austin LGBT Bar in conjunction with the Austin Bar Association awards scholarships each year to deserving law students who are committed to work in LGBT legal issues. This year, at the annual State Bar Convention, two scholarships of $5000 each were awarded to two Texas law students who had demonstrated a commitment to work in LGBT law.

On October 13, 2016, the Austin LGBT Bar will hold its second annual Sculpting the Future Scholarship Gala at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden in Austin. Tickets are available for purchase and all of the proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund. Guests will enjoy refreshments, music, a live sculpting demonstration, and a silent art auction.

The Gala will honor Travis County Probate Judge Guy Herman and Democrat nominee for the Travis County District Court Jan Soifer for their contributions to LGBT legal equality.
