The iconic and profoundly influential Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is often cited as a catalyst for an entire movement in country rock and American roots music, and continues to draw an impressive following nearly 50 years after its 1966 founding. Their latest release, 2009’s Speed of Life, was well-received by critics as evidenced by a review in The Washington Post that proclaimed:

‘In the annals of cool music, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band still ranks high among musicians and fans alike.‘

Singer-guitarist Jeff Hanna and drummer Jimmie Fadden have been around since the early days. Multi-instrumentalist John McEuen was with the band from 1966 to 1986 and returned during 2001, and keyboardist Bob Carpenter joined the band in 1977. The band’s successes include a cover version of Jerry Jeff Walker’s ‘Mr. Bojangles‘ and albums including 1972’s Will the Circle be Unbroken, featuring traditional country greats, with a 1989 follow-up album based on the same concept, Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Volume Two, which was certified gold, won two GRAMMY Awards and was named Album of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards.
