THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED (1926) - rare archive silent hand tinted 35mm print presentation with Live Score accompaniment by Many Birthdays (ATX)

Filmmaker Lotte Reiniger was a German film director and the foremost pioneer of silhouette animation. Lotte self described herself as a “primitive caveman artist”. Lotte worked continuusly on films from her silent shorts in the early 20′s to the late 1970′s. Reiniger pioneering stlye relied on thousands of photos of paper cut-out silhouettes arranged to tell a story. It was a painstaking process that involved moving paper characters ever so slightly and snapping a photo of each movement.

Many Birthdays brings a colorful and wide, dynamic range of sound and musical imagery in their live score to “The Adventures of Prince Achmed”. The band’s instrumentation of swirling guitars and keyboards is further augmented by string players and percussion. The intricate and lush silhouettes on the screen are beautifully enhanced by dreamlike soundscapes. The battle scenes involving the Sorcerer, his army of monsters, and the Witch of the Fiery Mountain are all energetically played out with drums and synthesizers. Many Birthdays performed the Achmed score twice at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin in 2010 and 2011, and in 2016 at the Texas Theatre in Dallas.
