If you follow the history of exploitation down the dark and sleazy sexploitation branch, eventually you come upon a curious subset of films lovingly known as "nunsploitation." The key elements of a nunsploitation movie are simple to keep track of: nuns and sex. Japan may be the last place you'd expect to produce a nunsploitation picture, but sure enough the island nation with less than 3% of the population practicing Christianity produced this stylish, shocking movie in 1974. SCHOOL OF THE HOLY BEAST follows a new member of the convent as she navigates corruption and hypocrisy while surreptitiously learning information about her mother who mysteriously died at the convent years prior. Covert lesbianism, brutal sadism, and conspiracy are all uncovered as she digs further into the crooked convent. This isn't some cheap, grindhouse affair, however: director Noribumi Suzuki, a purveyor of many Japanese pinky violence films, and his adroit Japanese crew film acts of cruelty and perversity with artful skill, turning horrific acts of violence into beautiful moments of cinema. We'll be screening a rare, English subtitled 35mm print courtesy of Cult Epics.
