Latino Music Month Showcases Diverse Musical Styles

Austin CVB has joined up once more with the Austin Latino Music Association (ALMA) to promote Latino Music Month (LMM), which runs May 1-31, and showcases the eclectic sounds of Austin's Latino artists. Now in its third year, LMM presents festivals and performances, coloring the musical landscape with rock en Espanol, conjunto, mariachi, salsa and Latin jazz. Last year, LMM included more than 300 shows in some 100 venues. These performances contributed to more than $616 million in economic impact generated by live music in 2007.

Austin CVB partnered with ALMA in order to increase community awareness about the diversity of local music. As part of the promotional collaboration, the Bureau helped to produce Austin Music Mezcla, a limited-release, 20-song compilation album featuring such big-name Latino artists as Alejandro Escovedo, David Garza, Del Castillo, Grupo Fantasma and Vallejo. The CD will be distributed to local and national media and is available to the public via on-air radio giveaways only.

Latino bands highlight the lineup at clubs and festivals throughout the month. In addition, Latino artists perform at ABIA and at the "Live from the Plaza" concert series every Friday at City Hall. Audiences can also discover the city's premier Latino acts at festivals and events. A complete listing of performances and venues is available at wwww.austilatinomusic.com.
