Austin Promo Video Debuted—The Austin CVB launched a new promotional video this week at the International Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus (IACVB) annual convention. Film from the Lance Armstrong victory parade, an Austin City Limits taping of Los Lonely Boys and aerial shots of the downtown skyline and the ACL Festival frame the video used by the Austin CVB to showcase the city to clients. Local attractions, events and businesses generously donated some of the footage featured in the video titled “Heaven Is…Austin.”

McWilliams Appointed to Tourism Advisory Committee—The Office of the Governor, Economic Development & Tourism has appointed Adriana McWilliams, director of tourism at the Austin CVB, to the Tourism Advisory Committee. The committee provides recommendations to the Texas Tourism office marketing the state in the U.S. and internationally. McWilliams term continues through 2007.

CVB Tourism Hosts Canadian FAM—Canadian incentive travel and meeting planners convened in Austin, July 16-17, for a familiarization tour hosted by the Austin CVB Tourism and Texas Tourism. The group stayed at the Omni Downtown, visited the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, Esther’s Follies, Horseshoe Bay Resort Marriott, Barton Creek Resort & Spa, Intercontinental Stephen F. Austin Hotel and the Driskill Hotel and dined at Stubb’s and Mezzaluna.

Airport Traffic Up—According to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport officials, passenger traffic has reached its highest level since July 2001. Total passenger traffic at the airport in June was 703,932, an increase of 4 percent compared with June 2004. Total passenger traffic at ABIA rose 6 percent to 3.7 million passengers for the year.

Cabela’s

Cabela’s opened its new store in Buda in June amid predictions that it could draw 3.5 million annual visitors to the area, nearly 900 times the city’s population. The store is expected to become one of the largest tourist attractions in Texas, possibly eclipsing the Alamo.
