Austin Sizzles with Summer Conventions

Austin CVB showcased the Live Music Capital of the World™ to more than 50,000 visitors in July. Overall, the music, food and ambiance generated an enthusiastically positive buzz among attendees.

NAMM, the International Music Products Association, unveiled the latest and greatest in music product development and generated an economic impact of $29.8 million. Nationally and locally based music vendors, dealers and musicians enjoyed a three-day tradeshow, panel discussions and surprise visits from celebrities such as Peter Frampton and Macy Gray. Vendors found a lucrative audience among the Austin attendees.

"The NAMM University sessions were packed all weekend; supplier and dealers concerns were dealt with in an open and productive manner; and most importantly, a lot of independent dealers struggling with a changing retail model found new energy and hope from being around their peers in this great musical city," notes Joe Lamond, president and CEO of NAMM.

Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) brought more than 1,200 tourism industry professionals to Austin, generating an economic impact of $3.5 million. Austin CVB celebrated a chance to showcase the city's diverse offerings among its peers with live music and great regional cuisine during the sessions and social events. This convention attracted the highest attendance in the 92-year history of the association's annual meetings.

"One of the highlights of my trip was Austin's music and restaurant scene and I was delighted at the first rate quality and variety of both. I am sure that I can speak on behalf of the other delegates when I say that Austin is indeed a beautiful and fascinating city," says Jon Hutchison, DMAI board chair and managing director of the Sydney, Australia CVB.
