Spotlight on: 2nd Street District
The 2nd Street District has quickly become Austin's premier downtown pedestrian shopping area. The shops offer upscale retail, distinctive cuisine and a chic day spa within walking distance of the Austin Convention Center and downtown hotels. In the spirit of the Live Music Capital of the World™, guests often linger in 2nd Street boutiques to enjoy live music from local performers.
Meeting planners can book meetings or receptions in private event space available from several of the area's restaurants and retailers. Shorelines Gallery provides a backdrop of elaborate jewelry and artwork for small receptions. Cru - A Wine Bar offers event space and tailors wine tastings, receptions or full wine dinners paired with exceptional cuisine. Groups can also rent space at Lambert's (opening late September) for a taste of Texas barbecue to flavor their events. While no rental space is available at Cantina Laredo, the restaurant caters parties with an authentic Tex-Mex experience, including optional margarita machines and mariachis. No meeting is complete without dessert, and Paciugo caters Italian gelato for special events.
Several distinct eateries allow for dining options from a quick snack to an extended evening. Local favorite Jo's Coffee Shop welcomes guests throughout the day for coffee, pastries and casual dining. Taverna offers elegant, traditional Italian cuisine indoors or on a sidewalk patio. Six more restaurants, including the exclusive American eatery III Forks and popular Austin Java, are scheduled to open this year.
Leisure time also allows 2nd Street shoppers to pamper or adorn themselves and seek out innovations in home decor. Fashion addicts find hip styles at Cowboy Cool and Estilo, while Eliza Page showcases jewelry by artists from Austin and around the U.S. Interior design stores such as the locally based Home Retreat and Mercury Design Studio incorporate natural beauty into home decor. Loft and IF+Design feature classic and contemporary designs for modern city living.
An afternoon at Milk + Honey Day Spa provides rest and relaxation from the day's business. Body, skin and nail beauty treatments are available, and licensed therapists practice acupuncture for healing.
The 2nd Street District stretches from Colorado to San Antonio Streets between Cesar Chavez and Third Street. For details and a guide to shops, including contact information and event space rental, visit www.2ndstreetretaildistrict.com.
