Tourism Shows Healthy Growth

Over the past three years, the number of annual visitors to Austin increased by two million people, and tourism created 10,000 new jobs. Based on that growth, tourism has replaced manufacturing as the city's fifth largest economic sector. These findings about the healthy outlook of the industry come from a newly released study on the economic impact of travel and tourism in the Austin-Round Rock MSA.

Austin CVB commissioned Global Insight, in partnership with D.K. Shifflet & Associates, to update a comprehensive City Tourism Impact study conducted in 2003 that provided a benchmark for the impact of tourism on the local economy. Along with a jump in the total number of visitors, from nearly 17 million to 19 million, the most significant measure relates to employment growth. As tourism employment growth averaged more than 5 percent annually from 2003 to 2006, overall employment growth in Austin increased by only 3 percent during that same period.

Tourism-generated employment now comprises 13.5 percent of all non-governmental jobs in Austin for a total of 75,863 jobs and $1.95 billion annually in wages. Other key findings show that travelers spent $3.5 billion in 2006 in the five-county MSA. Their spending generated a $2.82 billion economic impact. In addition, state and local governments received $400 million in taxes from travelers—$100 million more than initially estimated.
