Spotlight on: Mexican American Cultural Center
The Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC), located at 600 River Street, celebrates Austin's Hispanic heritage and offers the city's newest meetings and events venue.
Featuring a distinctively modern design by CasaBella Architects, Del Campo & Maru and Mexican architect Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon, the center's two main buildings are accented by hand-chiseled concrete panels common throughout Mexico. The museum's three rotating galleries currently feature a retrospective collection by Carlos Piñeda, Mexic-Arte Museum's "Young Latino Art Exhibit" and artist Sam Coronado's "Serie" project.
The $16 million cultural center offers several private event spaces for groups of all sizes. The crescent-shaped main building opens up to a plaza that overlooks Lady Bird Lake and functions as the primary meeting space. It can accommodate up to 500 people with coffee concession areas, a cinema screen and great views of Austin's natural beauty. Groups can also rent a performance studio, with capacity for up to 50 attendees, and two classrooms that each seat 25.
A multi-purpose room, located in the 15,000 square-foot pyramid building, hosts up to 300 guests for a reception or up to 150 guests when outfitted with a stage or seated banquet tables. All meeting spaces are equipped with wireless internet, LCD projectors and screens. The facility is equipped with a kitchen to accommodate privately catered events.
The MACC celebrates its grand opening September 14-15. Festivities include an official ribbon cutting, dance, music and theatrical performances.
For booking, contact the rentals department at 512-478-6222 or visit www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/macc_index.htm.
