Head for these Hills

National Geographic Adventure
(February 2006)

"Day 1: Those who say Hill Country ain't as wild as it used to be have obviously never waited out the summer tubing crowd and waded into the clear, cold Guadalupe River, one of the eco-minded Trout unlimited's top 100 U.S. trout streams...Stay at Gruene Mansion Inn and two-step next door to Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas."

Big Easy's Musicians Move Their Acts to Austin

The Washington Post
(November 30, 2005)

"The self-proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World, the place that gave rock-and-roll superstar Janis Joplin her start in the 1960s, is sounding a little funkier these days. The chili, as one of the famed Neville Brothers sings in his new regular gig, has met the gumbo..."

Sales Meeting Hot Spots
(November 2005)

"Activities: If golf is important to your group, you're likely aware of the top golf resorts named by Golf Digest, Conde Nast Traveler, and others. In addition, we'd suggest that you look at ways some golf resorts draw nongolfers into golf-centered activities. For example, Barton Creek Resort & Spa, in Austin, Texas, does a mixture of a cocktail hour and shootout. With a beverage cart and a gallery of nongolfing cheerers, contestants try for the best score on the first hole."

Tulsa World
(November 13, 2005)

"Love him or despise him, LBJ is an interesting, one-of-a-kind American politician. A visit to his library and museum is worth a trip to Austin."

InStyle
(December 2005)

"Austin, Light Bar: Students and stars (Luke Wilson, Matthew McConaughey) converge at this popular spot. Snag a vibrating 'relaxation' chair or go to the roof lounge for an awesome city view."

The Heritage Tourism Boom

Black Meetings & Tourism
(December 2005/January 2006)

"In Austin, Texas, visitors can explore the history and architecture of the Capitol grounds, Congress Avenue and E. Sixth Street, and the Bremond Block on a free, guided walking tour that's available from March through November."

Eyes & Ears of Texas on Bill [Clinton] by Liz Smith

New York Post
(November 4, 2005)

"In Austin I lunched in the Four Seasons dining room, where they have those innovative dark napkins so you won't get white lint on your dark suit. I see they now serve iced tea without ice cubes. The tea itself is frozen into globs, so it never dilutes! The most entertaining night in Texas was seeing the great nine-time Grammy winner Ray Benson in his signature musical about the late country-western king Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys."

Long Center for the
Performing Arts

Built as a monument to the space age, the Palmer Auditorium sat on the south banks of Town Lake since 1959. Over the years, the auditorium housed many of Austin's biggest events, including performances from Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. Then in May 1999, a $20 million donation from Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long allowed for the renovation of the outdated auditorium into a world-class performing arts center.
