Visitor Center Staff Undergoes Changes

The Austin Visitor Center recently hired a new retail operations manager and visitor center manager.

Saundra Turner has been promoted to visitor center manger. Turner began working at the center as a volunteer in 2003 and was hired as a full-time employee in 2004. A native of California, she graduated from Sacramento State College.

As retail sales manager, Cheri Winterrowd brings nearly 30 years of retail sales experience to the center, most recently spending six years as sales supervisor at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Winterrowd oversees product marketing, merchandise buying and the retail inventory. She began her career as a buyer in Austin for Scarbrough's.

“Saundra and Cheri are well-suited to manage all aspects of the center, from providing the highest level of service to out-of-town guests to significantly increasing retail sales,” says Bob Lander, president and CEO of the Austin CVB. “Since moving to Sixth Street, the Visitor Center has grown into a one-stop shop for Austin visitors.”

Tickets for Segcity, Austin Ghost Tours, Austin Duck Adventures, Lone Star River Boat, Capital Cruises and Austin Overtures are available at the center. AusTix staffs a booth there to sell discount tickets to various cultural arts performances. The center also provides computer terminals with Internet access so visitors can check email and book hotel rooms online.

The Visitor Center remains open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m.

America’s Best New Chefs ‘05

Food & Wine
(July 2005)

“Tyson Cole, Uchi, Austin, TX: Why: Because he’s managed the seemingly impossible task of combining a traditional Japanese sensibility with thoroughly American audacity. The result: food that’s utterly delicious and wildly inventive.”

“I just love the vibe there. You have everything: It’s one of the most active cities in the U.S. in terms of outdoor activities, it has a great live-music scene, and it doesn’t have the ‘scene-y-ness’ of New York or L.A. You have a bunch of hole-in-the-wall bars where you can just blend in. It’s fun.”

Why Everyone Loves Austin

Financial Times (U.S. Edition)
(May 7, 2005)

“Then there’s Austin’s live music scene. Visitors arriving at the airport are greeted by signs saying ‘Welcome to the Live Music Capital of the World.’ The city hosts two important music festivals each year—South by Southwest and Austin City Limits—as wells as a constant stream of live acts in its downtown clubs. The city council listens to a live band during its session breaks, and Will Wynn, the mayor who keeps a guitar in his office, says he wants music to be the city’s selling point.”
