Spotlight on: Cork & Co.
One of downtown's newest venues adds a touch of Texas class to special events and receptions for groups wanting a unique experience in the heart of Austin. Cork & Co., a distinctive wine bar and retail shop located at 308 Congress Ave., offers tastings of Texas and other wines for small meetings and social events, in addition to daily happy hour specials and classes that are open to the public.
Cork & Co.'s daily "5 at 5" features five top selling wines for $5 a glass. The menu lists wines from Texas, Latin America, Italy, South Africa, Spain and more. Guests may also enjoy cleverly-named wine flights; "Forgive me, for I have Zinned" and "Chairman of the Bourdeaux" are popular choices. Servers recommend hand-dipped truffles, a cheese plate or a charcuterie plate to accompany wines. Each tasting wine is also available for retail sale, as the shop offers a total of 59 retail red, white, sparkling and late harvest selections.
The staff aims to inform guests about wine as they enjoy special theme days. On Sunday, guests play board games while sipping their favorite varietals. Monday's "Mama Mia!" event features gourmet pizza paired with three different wines. On Tuesday nights, "Miss Jane's Wine Class" teaches the properties of various regional wines and pairings of cheese, pizza, chocolate, or other foods. A full listing of special events is available at www.corkandco.com.
Cork & Co. is available daily for group happy hours, corporate events, wine dinners and more. It can also be rented for private parties on Saturday afternoons from noon- 5 p.m. Guests can manipulate the flexible space to enjoy events ranging from plated, multi-course dinners to festive tastings that encourage guests to mingle.

Destination Update: Texas
Meeting News (May 8, 2006)
"Austin's hospitality industry is poised to enjoy a banner year with hotel occupancy rates rising and four new hotels set to open. 'We finally have our full meetings package in place, which has allowed us to sell to larger, national conventions,' said CVB spokesperson Cynthia Maddox."
Big Country
Elle (June 2006)
"A cute city; cool and a bit alternative...Austin is the state capital, the 'live music capital' of the US and a fun place to hang out...we hit the music venues and...have a perfect night out. We're the only tourists, and everyone is soooo friendly and polite, in that old-fashioned, sexy Southern way."
Still Ain't Braggin'
The Dallas Morning News (June 4, 2006)
"Five years ago, Austin got something to brag about. The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum opened its doors with Texas swagger...Now the museum is celebrating its success. Since 2001 it has welcomed nearly 3 million guests and is now the top paid attraction in Austin."
