This Summer, It's Austin's Time to Shine

Austin can make the record books twice this summer—once, when the Republic of Texas Biker Rally attempts to break the Guinness Book of World Records for longest parade of motorcycles and again when the city welcomes a record number of meetings and conventions to the area. More than 100,000 people attending meetings and conferences are expected to visit Austin in June and July.

After the Republic of Texas bikers roll out of Austin, the city welcomes a summer of more than 35 meetings of education officials, music industry suppliers, coaches and government and law professionals. While many organizations are based in Texas, the city continues to attract an increased number of national and international association meetings.

The annual DMAI (Destination Marketing Association International) conference invites 1,200 tourism industry representatives from across the globe, July 19-22. Their arrival gives Austin a prime opportunity to shine as a premier leisure and business destination. The conference, headquartered at the Hilton Austin, opens with a grand reception at the Austin Convention Center. Famed music venue La Zona Rosa is the site of the closing party.

NAMM (the International Music Products Association), based out of Carlsbad, CA, meets in the Live Music Capital of the World™ this year from July 13-16. More than 20,000 music industry professionals and product developers gather to do business and fully enjoy the local music scene.

As many as 20,000 members of the Texas High School Coaches Association come together July 31-August 2. A highlight of that conference is the high school All-Star Football and Basketball Games, taking place at Royal-Memorial Stadium and Frank Erwin Center. The Games are the longest running high school all star games in the United States. Other summer conference highlights include the Texas Association for School Nutrition with 2,000 attendees from June 4-7, followed immediately by the Texas Association of School Principals coming June 7-9 with 4,000 attendees and another 1,000 education officials for the Texas Educational Support Staff Association Summer Conference, June 21-23.

Destination Texas

Southwest Airlines Spirit
(April 2006)

"The State Capitol. The University of Texas. The Live Music Capital of the World. However you know Austin, you know you love it. Full of energy and buzz, the city is growing fast. Yet it still has that laid-back feeling—like nothing is so urgent you can't sit down under the trees with a cold beverage and just work it all out."

Austin: No Limits

The Kansas City Star
(May 21, 2006)

"Still, it's not hard to find pockets of the old Austin, the place that made it such a joy to visit. The restaurants and bars along Sixth Street downtown are still crowded after dark. Threadgill's still serves a mean chicken-fried steak. And thousands of bats still darken the sky as they come out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge each evening."

The Seven Wonders of the World-Music

The Globe and Mail (Toronto, ON)
(April 22, 2006)

"With a true Texas disdain for false modesty, Austin has registered a trademark on the phrase, 'Live Music Capital of the World.'...This is the spiritual home home of the outlaw tendency in American roots music, characterized by Willie Nelson and Townes van Zandt, who lived here."
