Oasis Back in Business

When the popular Oasis Restaurant burned during a lightening storm last summer, the fire made national headlines. After all, Texans declare the Oasis their favorite place to watch the sun set, thereby legitimizing the restaurant's claim as the "Sunset Capital of Texas."

Shortly after the fire, owner Beau Theriot promised that the restaurant/music venue/special events facility would return "bigger and better than ever." He's making good on his promise. When all phases of construction are completed, the capacity of the Oasis will increase by one-third to accommodate 3,200 people. Most of the facility will re-open by the end of August.

Still operating is the Starlight, which re-opened a week after the fire. Live music plays on the open-air terrace that seats 500.

The Tuscan-style special events facility is also operating again with a busy slate of receptions, banquets and other events. The casually elegant, third-floor Top of the Oasis and Sunset Room, located directly underneath, accommodate 300 guests and offer stunning views from 450 feet above Lake Travis.

Nationally acclaimed Chef Tim Keating, a James Beard award winner, recently joined the Oasis staff as executive chef. He spent eight years at the Four Seasons Houston as executive chef of the hotel's Quattro restaurant. Chef Keating will soon release a new menu that expands the restaurant's offerings from casual lake food to also include more upscale cuisine to be served in one of the new restaurants.

Construction begins next week on the famous 40 levels of decks that cascade down the cliff side toward the lake. The decks should be completed by mid-July, and service will resume as the various stages are finished. The central portion of the restaurant is being rebuilt as a three-story dining facility that will include a steakhouse. When it is completed in late August, the Starlight will close in its current location and move to the third floor of this new building. It will remain an open-air music venue but one with a retractable roof that allows guests to enjoy their food, music and views in any kind of weather.

Plans also call for a European-style shopping village to be built in Starlight's current location. Along with specialty stores and gift shops, the village will also feature two more restaurants.
