Austin Celebrates National Tourism Week
In celebration of National Tourism Week, Dexter Koehl, vice president of Industry Relations for Travel Industry Association of America, presents a "State of the Industry" address on the importance of travel and service in the tourism industry at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum on May 18 at 8:30 a.m. The program also includes the announcement of two winning photographs from Austin High School students who submitted entries for an exhibit and contest showcasing Austin through their eyes. New Developments Enhance Tourism Product
Austin is preparing for some dramatic changes over the next few years. The construction of several hotels, a new retail shopping district and new attractions such as the Blanton Museum of Art invite an increase in leisure tourism as well as bolster the city's appeal among meetings and conventions professionals. The 2nd Street Retail district already boasts six blocks of street level retail featuring restaurants, coffee shops, trendy urban boutiques and upscale home decor stores. Residence Inn & Courtyard Inn by Marriott open in late August with 449 downtown hotel rooms. New Media Relations Manager Joins ACVB
Austin CVB recently named Beth Krauss as Media Relations Manager for the Marketing Communications Department. In this position, Krauss works with the local, national and international media to generate editorial coverage about Austin and the tourism industry.

Most Valuable Player: Austin Sports Commission
The newly formed Austin Sports Commission, in conjunction with the Austin Economic Club, hosts its first public event next month that features a luncheon with the commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.
Kevin Weiberg, commissioner of the conference for the past eight years, speaks on the "State of the Big 12" on June 29 at 11:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Austin. The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum celebrates its fifth anniversary with a new look at its inaugural exhibit. It STILL Ain't Braggin' If It's True! celebrates Texas heritage with items honoring "vision, perseverance, pride, showmanship, and swagger." The exhibit opens with a concert from Grammy® winning Conjunto legend Flaco Jimenez on the museum's Lone Star Plaza at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 26. Concert-goers will also get a sneak preview of the exhibit, which opens to the public on May 27.
