Most Valuable Player: Austin Sports Commission
The newly formed Austin Sports Commission, in conjunction with the Austin Economic Club, hosts its first public event next month that features a luncheon with the commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.
Kevin Weiberg, commissioner of the conference for the past eight years, speaks on the "State of the Big 12" on June 29 at 11:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Austin. University of Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds will introduce Weiberg. Reservations for the luncheon are available by contacting Jennifer McKinney, 512-583-7206 or jmckinney@austintexas.org.
The Austin Sports Commission, operating under the auspices of ACVB, recruits professional, collegiate and amateur sporting events to the city. Results of the Sports Commission's work are evident this summer with a busy schedule of sports and recreation events.
The Sports Commission forecasts as many as 51,000 visitors attending 17 sports conferences and events from May through August.
The Junior Volleyball Association of Austin competes in a tournament on May 6-7. The University Interscholastic League Softball holds state championship tournaments for softball from May 31-June 4. The Texas High School Coaches Association heads to Austin for its annual convention and coaching school; more than 20,000 high school coaches and other delegates are expected to attend events at the Austin Convention Center from July 26-August 2. Athletes take to the streets with WalkAmerica to benefit March of Dimes on May 13 and the CapTex Triathlon for Meals on Wheels from May 26-30. The Texas Firefighter Olympics heat things up July 9-14.

The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum celebrates its fifth anniversary with a new look at its inaugural exhibit.It STILL Ain't Braggin' If It's True! celebrates Texas heritage with items honoring "vision, perseverance, pride, showmanship, and swagger."
