Bands Play on in Austin
Colorado Springs Gazette (September 14, 2005)
"Percussionist Cyril Neville of New Orleans' first family of soul said the decision to move to Austin, where he and his family waited out the previous two hurricanes, was an easy one. 'Austin's the only city I know of where I could pick up the same vibe as New Orleans,' said the new South Austinite. 'You don't have to instruct the musicians here or tell them what key the song is in.'"
Texas Two-Step
219 South (September 2005)
"Even if you decide to wing it, Austin will keep you moving, whether it's to the music, down a trail or to the nearest barbeque shack."
Head for the Hills
Diversions (October 2005)
"How cool is Austin? Within two hours of landing, we'd checked in to the Four Seasons hotel downtown, then wandered over to Waterloo Records & Video, the place to pick up some Texas music for the road. It was 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon, and The Gourds, a hot local band with a national reputation, were setting up to play a free concert on the tiny stage right next to the checkout counter. Not only were they terrific, but the store was dispensing free beer from a keg in the aisles. Free beer and free music right in the same store! Does your town have anything like that? I don't think so."
World Report Dispatches―The Inside Scoop from Our Contributors
National Geographic Traveler (November/December 2005)
"Texas Sleep: The Hotel San Jose in Austin shatters any preconceived notions an East Coaster might have of Texas. You could find a note on your pillow inviting you to an outdoor movie screening in the hotel's parking lot. Surprising, in a good way."
Whole Foods Gets Fashionable
Lucky (October 2005)
"It was only a matter of time before this do-gooding empire, already famous for making organic food and beauty products so palatable, started selling all-natural, sweatshop free clothing that we actually want to wear. It is now a destination for trouser-style Loomstate jeans, hip-grazing Steward + Brown tees, and vegan bags. In March, a boutique debuted within the Austin flagship, and a freestanding West Hollywood branch will open at the end of October, with more locations to follow across the country."
