Where the Women Are
Women's Wear Daily (September 2005)
"Metro areas with the highest percentages of women from 18 to 44 years of age. #1-Austin-San Marcos, Tex. Percentages of females ages 18 to 44 in region: 45. There is more to Texas than presidents, cowboys and oil magnates. A vibrant nightlife and eclectic shopping are definite lures to the capital, Austin, located 162 miles northwest of Houston. And holding events such as South by Southwest, a film and music festival can increase the potential for females to relocate to the area. Colleges are an even bigger draw. At the University of Texas at Austin women constitute more than 50 percent of the student population. Unique shops fill the neighborhoods, as well."
Vacation: Austin, Texas
Jane (September 2005)
"The SoCo area, named for South Congress Street, which bisects it, is filled with fun stores like Lucy in Disguise With Diamonds, the largest costume shop I've ever seen; Allens Boots, which stocks hundred of multicolored pairs; and great fashion-indie stores like FactoryPeople and Parts and Labor. We've only been in the city for two hours, but already I've noticed a lot of hot women driving huge pickup trucks."
Austin Rocks
Woman's World (September 13, 2005)
"An awesome music festival, great weather and a whole passel of attractions make the Lone Star State capital an ideal autumn destination. If rolling green hills and sparking lakes and rivers aren't what sprint to mind when you think of Texas, then you haven't been to Austin! Located the Hill Country, the state capital is a heart-of-Texas oasis, where the days are sunny and the recreational possibilities next to endless. Add to that a diverse range of restaurants, shopping and an entertainment scene that's made the city the "Live Music Capital of the World" and the site of Austin City Limits Music Festival, and you'll get why Austin's generating so much buzz."
Five Cities to See this Fall
VIA (September/October 2005)
"In the 'Live Music Capital of the World,' you can get a megadose of noteworthy sounds at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, September 23-25. This year's lineup includes Coldplay, Wilco, and some 100 other bands. Other must-dos: Get a taste of the region's fall bounty at the new Whole Foods Market World Headquarters; in the evening, watch 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge (through the end of October)."
Where Foodies Love to Eat
Budget Travel (September 2005)
"Barton Springs public pool, south Austin, is a liquid town square. The snack shack there has catfish fry, burgers, and Coke floats, not to mention pigeon and duck food. Artz Ribhouse is a roadhouse, with cacti out front that are taller than the building. You can get a half-rack of ribs with potato salad or coleslaw for $9. Carolyn Wonderland and Shelley King were playing when we were there-imagine eating baby backs while Janis Joplin serenaded you," in an interview with Davia Nelson & Nikki Silva, the "Kitchen Sisters."
