New Sports Commission Formed

The new Austin Sports Commission, under the purveyance of the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau, recruits professional, collegiate and amateur sporting events to the city and provides support to existing major events. Working in partnership with the Greater Austin Sports Association (GASA), the organization promotes Austin to the growing national sports market.

Craig Jenkins and Matthew Payne move over from the Austin CVB convention sales staff to handle sports marketing duties. Both have extensive experience in the sports arena. Jenkins previously served as vice president and general manager for the Austin Ice Bats. Under his management, the team led the league in revenue and attendance for three consecutive years. Payne also worked for Austin's professional hockey team.

The Sports Commission assists local organizing committees in locating appropriate venues and securing sponsorships for their events, as well as offering promotional support to increase participation and attendance. Through his work at Austin CVB, Jenkins serves as the primary point of contact for the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) tour stop in Austin. As home to the University of Texas and with its national reputation as a prime outdoor and recreational destination, Austin is an attractive market for numerous sporting competitions and exhibitions.

Where the Women Are

Women's Wear Daily
(September 2005)

"Metro areas with the highest percentages of women from 18 to 44 years of age. #1-Austin-San Marcos, Tex. Percentages of females ages 18 to 44 in region: 45. There is more to Texas than presidents, cowboys and oil magnates. A vibrant nightlife and eclectic shopping are definite lures to the capital, Austin, located 162 miles northwest of Houston. And holding events such as South by Southwest, a film and music festival can increase the potential for females to relocate to the area. Colleges are an even bigger draw. At the University of Texas at Austin women constitute more than 50 percent of the student population. Unique shops fill the neighborhoods, as well."

Vacation: Austin, Texas

(September 2005)

"The SoCo area, named for South Congress Street, which bisects it, is filled with fun stores like Lucy in Disguise With Diamonds, the largest costume shop I've ever seen; Allens Boots, which stocks hundred of multicolored pairs; and great fashion-indie stores like FactoryPeople and Parts and Labor. We've only been in the city for two hours, but already I've noticed a lot of hot women driving huge pickup trucks."
