Spotlight on: National Basketball Development League
Starting in November, visitors to the Austin Convention Center won't have to go far for some professional sports action. The National Basketball Development League (NBDL), or the D-League franchise, adds 23 home games to the center's roster during the inaugural season.

The first game for the Austin Toros is November 25. They join seven other teams in the league, which provides players an opportunity to develop their talents in a competitive environment under the National Basketball Association's (NBA) umbrella.
The Toros offer discount rates for groups of 15 or more and even greater discounts for groups over 100. Contact 512-236-8333 or visit www.nba.com/dleague for more information. Regular tickets range from $8-27.
Competition for the Toros includes teams from Albuquerque, NM; Sherwood, AR; Fayetteville, NC; Fort Meyers, FL; Fort Worth, TX; Roanoke, VA and Tulsa, OK.
The basketball team joins a growing roster of pro teams in Austin, where minor-league football, hockey and baseball fill the calendar year-round. The Austin Wranglers arena football (www.austinwranglers.com), Austin Ice Bats hockey (www.icebats.com) and Round Rock Express baseball (www.roundrockexpress.com) teams all offer special rates for group ticket sales.

Where the Women Are
Women's Wear Daily (September 2005)
"Metro areas with the highest percentages of women from 18 to 44 years of age. #1-Austin-San Marcos, Tex. Percentages of females ages 18 to 44 in region: 45. There is more to Texas than presidents, cowboys and oil magnates. A vibrant nightlife and eclectic shopping are definite lures to the capital, Austin, located 162 miles northwest of Houston. And holding events such as South by Southwest, a film and music festival can increase the potential for females to relocate to the area. Colleges are an even bigger draw. At the University of Texas at Austin women constitute more than 50 percent of the student population. Unique shops fill the neighborhoods, as well."
Vacation: Austin, Texas
Jane (September 2005)
"The SoCo area, named for South Congress Street, which bisects it, is filled with fun stores like Lucy in Disguise With Diamonds, the largest costume shop I've ever seen; Allens Boots, which stocks hundred of multicolored pairs; and great fashion-indie stores like FactoryPeople and Parts and Labor. We've only been in the city for two hours, but already I've noticed a lot of hot women driving huge pickup trucks."
