ACVB Names New Sports Commission Executive Director
Matthew Payne has been promoted to executive director of the Austin Sports Commission (ASC). With more than 12 years of sports industry experience and a degree from the University of Texas at Austin, Payne is dedicated to enhancing Austin's reputation as a national sports hub.
"Our mission is to recruit, retain and grow professional, collegiate and amateur sports events in the Austin area," Payne says. "People already know Austin for its outdoors and recreational offerings and for Longhorn sports, but they aren't always aware of its potential for other athletic events."
ASC assists organizers to locate appropriate venues, secure sponsorships and help increase participation and attendance at the events. Over the past few months, staff worked closely with several high-profile events, including Texas Relays, the Texas High School Coaches convention and the Orange County Choppers, that attracted large numbers of attendees, participants and media attention.
Prior to joining the ASC, Payne worked as director of corporate marketing and general manager of the Austin Ice Bats, where he helped to increase popularity of the Austin club and Central Hockey League. His prior experience as an account executive adds to his knowledge of the sales and group meeting industry.
