Collections

Preservationists work to maintain the quality and accuracy of the home’s interior. Furnishings and unique objects dating back to the 1850s are on display, along with an inside look at their backstories. The permanent collections take visitors back in time to Austin’s beginning. Explore the 19th century French parlor, dining room and three preserved bedrooms. Inside the home, visitors will find collections of unique fans, handbags, portraits and miniature painting. The contrast of the museum against its busy West Campus surroundings provides a glimpse into the transformation of Texas’ capital city.

Contrasting the home's lavish interior, the backyard is home to the only remaining slave dwelling in Austin. The Reckoning With the Past is the Neill-Cochran House's slave quarter restoration initiative, which recently completed a 2-year restoration of the quarters and continues to develop their programming.

The museum offers a docent guided tour once a month exploring the complex influence of slavery in Austin, including regularly scheduled tours of the quarters.
