THE GREAT RUSSIAN AMERICANS
After a year of lockdowns and virtual recitals, the Russian Speakers' Society of Austin is proud to present to you a concert program "The Great Russian Americans".
This unique event celebrates the musical heritage of Russian composers- emigrants who found their home in the United States of America. The musical traditionalist Alexander Grechaninov (1864-1956), the last titan of Romanticism Sergey Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), the fearless innovator Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), the devoted proponent of Yiddish language and music Lazar Weiner (1897-1982), and one of the most successful songwriters of all time Irving Berlin (1888-1989) - all of them were born in Imperial Russia and at different points of life moved to the United States. Their careers were dissimilar in many ways, but each one of them has left an invaluable imprint in the music and culture of 20th century America.
The Austin premiere of this program will feature vocal and instrumental masterpieces of Grechaninov, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Weiner, and Berlin, highlighting the most distinctive features of their compositional styles.
