Cookbook Bar & Café is launching the first annual Texas Cookbook Month, featuring special programming for the full month of October. The first event will kick off the month on Tuesday, October 2, and programming will run through Sunday, October 28, to celebrate the Texas food and beverage community. All events are free and open to the public throughout the month.

The official Texas Cookbook Month kick-off party on Tuesday, October 2, will honor Virginia B. Wood, the late Austin Chronicle food editor, to showcase her personal collection of over 500 cookbooks. Upon Wood’s passing in March 2018, a group of close friends and writers, spearheaded by Claudia Alarcón, MM Pack and Chef Pamela Nevarez-Fischer, chose Cookbook as the new home for the Virginia B. Wood Memorial Cookbook Collection, where food lovers and cooks alike could have access to them. During the kick-off event, guests can peruse the collection and learn more about Wood and her affinity for Texas food culture.

Weekly chef demos will take place each Tuesday of the month in Austin Central Library’s kitchen demo space. Some star chefs that guests can expect to see include Chef Drew Curren of ELM Restaurant Group and Chef Jesse Griffiths of Dai Due.

Each hour-long cooking demo and Q&A session will be followed by a reception in Cookbook Bar & Café, where guests will have a chance to meet the chefs, purchase their latest cookbooks with a signing, and experience a bite of the dish prepared during the demo. Cookbook patrons can then experience the specialty dish that was created at the demo for the following week on a special menu at the restaurant.

The month will also incorporate weekly “Meet the Maker” events each Thursday evening that will include panels featuring Texas beverage makers who have helped shape the Texas beverage industry. Each week, three leaders in the category of Distilleries, Wineries, Cideries and Breweries in Texas will take the floor to speak about their stories, challenges, successes and inspiration over the years. The full list of participants is included in the below schedule.

Each “Meet the Maker” panel will be followed by an event in Cookbook Bar & Café, during which guests can experience free samples of each beverage and meet the hard-working Texas makers behind the finely-crafted beverage products. In addition, Cookbook patrons can experience drinks from the month’s featured beverages throughout the month of October on the Cookbook beverage menu.

Cookbook is also launching a Saturday Night Date Night in the month of October, which will offer patrons a pre-fixe menu and a half bottle of wine for $50 per person, or $40 per person without wine. Beverages from panelist participants will also be featured throughout the month during each Saturday Night Date Night. The full menu for the dinners can be viewed here, and reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are also accepted. Reservations can be made by emailing reservations@cookbookatx.com.

The month of programming will close on October 28, with a one-year birthday party for Austin Central Library. The celebration will include a cake competition judged by ELM Restaurant Group’s own Pastry Chef Mary Catherine Curren.
