    About

Empathy in Action: A Filmmaker’s Drive to Help — moving and impactful evening centered around humanitarianism, art, and resilience.

The event features a screening of a critically acclaimed, award-winning full-length documentary by Polish filmmaker Maciek Hamela, who, in the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, bought a van and began evacuating civilians from war zones. For almost half a year, he drove farther and farther east, transporting refugees and recording their stories. His van was transformed into a lifeline, providing a temporary sense of normality, a refuge in which they could finally feel safe. The film was shot almost entirely inside the driver/director's van that operated as their shelter, waiting room, hospital and confessional amidst the ongoing geopolitical struggle that still occupies everyday news.

The resulting documentary, praised for its emotional depth and honesty, paints an unscripted portrait of courage and survival. Without exploiting violence, it conveys the truth about war. It has received over 30 international awards and was shortlisted for the 2024 Academy Awards for the Best Documentary Feature Film.
