The 4th annual LuluFest will take place on Saturday, May 16th and Sunday, May 17th in Austin. The focus of this two day event will be women bandleaders, both seasoned and up-and-coming, who are making music the focus of their lives. Also on Sunday, May 17th, at noon a masterclass/workshop will be offered by visiting artists at the home of Peggy Stern. We will concentrate on vocal, piano and sax techniques and duo disciplines. The workshop is open to all but seating is limited; reservations are required.

The festival is modeled after Ritenuto’s Wall Street Jazz Festival in Kingston, NY, which was an annual festival of women-led bands “where the traditions meet the progressives, and all the leaders are women,” and ran for 12 years. LuluFest expands on that idea to encompass not only jazz, but Latin and Western Swing, thereby broadening its appeal to the greater Austin audience.

This is not a women’s festival; on the contrary, most of the bands include men. The principle behind the festival is that the women leaders and their concepts of music are being presented here, thus distinguishing it from most other festivals in the country (and the world).

LuluFest 2020 is thrilled to present pianist/composer/vocalist Dena Derose (Graz, Austria), Grammy-nominated vocalist/song writer Kate McGarry (Oakland, CA), jazz saxophonist/composer Kristen Strom (San Jose, CA), as well as local artists including vocalist Danielle Reich, pianist Emily Gimble, trumpet player Rachel Spencer, vocalist/composer Leeann Atherton, pianist/ vocalist Sharon Bourbonnais, Estrella Salsa Jazz, the Austin Women’s Jazz Choir, vocalist Suzi Stern, pianist Peggy Stern, and more.

Presented by Ritenuto Foundation, Inc., a 501c3 Not For Profit Corporation
