This family-friendly festival will include Japanese food and drink, experience Japan tables with hands-on activities, cultural education and more. Featured entertainers from Austin’s sister city, Oita, Japan, will be Taichi Hikida, modern-rock shamisen Japanese guitarist; and Fumio Mieno, performing Japanese shodo dance calligraphy.
With two stages, attendees also can experience JPOP, Austin Taiko, Rakugo Japanese Comedy, Dark Circle Sumo, a tea ceremony, kimono fashion show, martial arts: kendo, jyuku, kyudo, a doing business in Japan seminar, a talk on Japanese gardening, and an artisan and festival marketplace.
The Austin-Oita Sister City Committee (AOSCC) hosts the annual festival. AOSCC’s mission is to promote and heighten public interest in and appreciation of the culture, people, languages, businesses, and products between the City of Austin and Oita, Japan. Oita, one of Austin’s 13 Sister Cities, has been a Sister City to Austin since 1990.
