Thread Count is a show dedicated to fabric art by five female Austin artists - Steef Crombach, Rakhee Jain Desai, Magdalena Jarkowiec, Melissa Knight and Sara Vanderbeek. The artists explore the limits and possibilities of fabric art and batik working in their own compelling themes and styles. A common thread between the artists’ work is the tension they feel navigating their own ‘traditional’ female roles in their art, lives, and the art-world as a whole. Other themes that come forward in this self-organized and curated show are immigrant identity, belonging, the exploration of cultural differences and expressions, the interweaving of community, the human problem of the body as a cultural and biological entity and the trials of dealing with mental illness in the American health care system.
