In celebration of World Listening Day, July 18th, 2025 at 6 pm, Collide Arts and Phonography Austin will present a workshop at Chicano Park, focused on documenting a soundscape that will change significantly through 2031.
Chicano Park is adjacent to I-35, where the Capital Express Central Project will be changing the footprint of the Interstate significantly. We’d like to capture it as it is, as sound recordings, sound pressure level data, and sound maps, to document a changing city in a way that is often overlooked, as well as providing a reference to compare to once the Capital Express Central Project is done. Will the acoustic environment be better off? Without real reference, it will be difficult to say.
We will present a brief talk about World Listening Day and acoustic ecology, describe the parameters of the project, describe possible documentation methodologies, then get to work. Phonography Austin members will be on hand to assist with documentation tech, as extensively as necessary.
