Face Coverings & Social Distancing

Austin Public Health (APH) has published a color-coded chart to help residents and visitors understand the stages of risk and provide recommendations on face coverings, social distancing and other safety recommendations (Austin is currently in Stage 2). Many businesses continue to require the use of face masks for staff and guests and may limit capacity or implement additional safety protocols at their own discretion. Learn More

Hotels & Lodging

As of March 10, 2021, Austin hotels can accommodate overnight guests at full capacity. Indoor meetings and other indoor gatherings at hotels may occur at 100 percent capacity. Indoor areas of hotel restaurants, bars and other alcoholic beverage service outlets can operate at up to 100 percent maximum capacity and outdoor areas of restaurants and bars can operate at up to 100 percent capacity.  Note: many hotels continue to require the use of face masks for staff and guests and may limit capacity or implement additional safety protocols at their own discretion.

Austin Convention Center & Palmer Events Center

The Austin Convention Center and Palmer Events Center are open and continue to adhere to all City of Austin, Travis County, State of Texas and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations.

Through June 2021, the social distancing requirement is three feet. Beginning in July 2021 and beyond, there will be no social distancing obligations. Although ACCD recommends wearing a mask during your visit to the facility, face coverings are optional for attendees, staff and clients, and enforcement is now the responsibility of the client. Health screenings and temperature checks upon entry are not required but are available as optional services per client request.

The Austin Convention Center Department (ACCD) has also implemented its Client Resource and Safety Action Plan. Developed in partnership with and under the guidance of local Austin Public Health officials, CDC guidelines, current federal and state guidelines and the Austin Convention Center Department executive team, this plan was commissioned to safeguard the health and well-being of clients, their events, its team members and the local Austin community. The plan outlines ACCD’s enhanced cleaning and sanitization protocols, physical and social distancing measures, requirements of all events, new responsibilities of venue employees and contractors, as well as modifications to food and beverage services. Learn More

In November 2020, the Austin Convention Center achieved the Global Biorisk Advisory Council® (GBAC) STAR™ accreditation, the gold standard for prepared facilities. Under the guidance of GBAC, a Division of ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, the Austin Convention Center Department has implemented the most stringent protocols for cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention for the facility. Special Event Venues

Austin event venues are working diligently to welcome you back to their spaces safely. By practicing and following recommended protocols from local health organizations and industry partners. The Austin Center for Events is developing reopening guidelines for special event venues.  In the meantime, businesses are utilizing this venue guide for best practices.


Austin’s restaurants (including those found in hotels) are open for dine-in indoor and outdoor patio service with no occupancy limits. Masks are strongly encouraged and in many places, required by business owners. They are committed to providing a safe, comfortable and unforgettable experience while ensuring staff and customer health. Many restaurants are participating in a reopening agreement to help guests “Dine With Confidence.
