Estudio Bradlio Selected Art by Bradford Maxfield

EXALTED

I was contacted by the offices of Michaels Hsu Architecture about helping to create something iconic for 812 San Antonio St. Parking Garage which is owned by the Endeavor Real Estate Group. After meeting Jay Colombo of Michael Hsu Architecture and Chad Marsh of Endeavor onsite, I was more than happy see such a huge wall in front of me. Standing at 55ft tall x 130ft wide, this is by far the largest scale mural Estudio Bradlio has created to date. The only thing that the client had asked for was to design something that said "Austin." As often happens I had a dream about the design, but the difference this time was that I met the wandering musician in my dream the next night down on South Congress. I asked if he would be willing to model for me at my studio and we actually got a harness from REI and hoisted him up 12 ft in the air with his guitar. How Austin is that! With a few tweaks, we had the design for the wall all set and then we had to figure out how to paint it. Too large to project we had to go old school and use a grid system. Taking cues all the way from 'The Creation of Adam," to Catholic paintings of saints, to Japanese wood block prints, to Mayan style lettering; we managed to mash up this gorgeous piece of the eccentric Austin Culture. I call the piece 'Exalted.' I'm very lucky to have worked with my painting partner Saeka Keeley (@saekart) on this project. She is incredible to say the least. Her meticulous attention to detail is bar none and always takes everything she works on to the next level; with this project being no exception. The entire wall is painted with exterior house paint for the large areas and all of the detail work is painted with spray paint. Big thanks to Jay Colombo and Heather Sandlin of Michael Hsu Architecture for suggesting Estudio Bradlio on this project, to Chad Marsh of Endeavor for believing we could make it happen, the onsite building manager Dennis Roetman was a real pleasure to work with, TJ Wright from Sunbelt Rentals, George Carson of Exterior Performance Coatings, Claude Florent of Rain Guard and Mike Techow and his cohorts of Austin Process LLC for dealing with us taking over their parking lot for a month and a half. Much Love :)

II was lucky enough to work big man Chef Shane Bondurant, Shirley Lam and their epic team over at Facebook again. Contracted by Facebook to be a part of their Artist in Residence Program, I was tasked at creating an art wall for the new taqueria that is located on the 21st floor of the downtown Austin campus. Facebook also worked with Stout Design Group to do more of the graphic branding including tiled design that you see on the above right side. This was such a fun project to work on. Chef Shane's initial concept was to create a 3d wooden calavera (skull) in my style as well as have a hand painted cow skull. I knew I had to blow it out of the water so I thought of adding some additional pieces to the mix. The whole things says "Always Time for some Tacos" and "Bienvenidos" or Welcome in Spanish. I also wanted to use some interesting paint so I contacted a company out of California called Sculpt Nouveau that creates specialty paints. I used both real copper and real iron paints and then sprayed various patinas on the metallic paints which cause the metal to oxidize. Think the Statue of Liberty for the greenish blue and iron for the rusty parts. Its truly was a fantastic working with the Facebook crew as well as one of my best friend Christin Atkinson for the install. I would not have been able to paint this with all of the badass fancy details if it weren't for my cohort @saekakeeley. Thanks a bunch to Chef Shane Bondurant, Shirley Lam, David Perez, Richard Rodriguez, Eli Galvan, and the Facebook crew for making this happen. Also, a big shout out to Jaime Riojas of Harvey Cleary for making life awesome during install.
Kurt Gross has been a long time friend of mine growing up in the wonder city of El Paso, TX; from my childhood and later on into the world of advertising. We kept up with each other over the years and after seeing that my career has been more involved with large scale art installations, he felt like I would be a good fit to invigorate the new entrance to Providence Children's Hospital. It was only after we started working on the project that he found out that I was actually born here. Talk about coming full circle on a project. Although my normal hand style tends to go onto the cartoony side, it was a challenge creating something that can speak to an audience that can run the gamut of age and health. After meeting with Sally Deitch and Kurt Gross about the plan, I came up with several ideas on how to speak to not only kids from 5-18 but also to their parents alike. Each piece has a message with the groundwork being that of “Healing Hands.” After designing the overall idea and 6 original artworks, a few talented friends and I were able to piece everything together to make it happen. A big thanks to the Hospitals of Providence including Kurt Gross and Sally Deitch for making this project happen, to the super compadres of Estudio Bradlio for helping to paint and make this project even better than I could have imagined. This includes Christin ‘Saeka Keeley’ Atkinson, Federico Archuleta, Fernando Fernandez, Kyleight ‘Kydomight!’ Dowling, my parents Jim and Michelle Maxfield and their friend Jill. I’m so happy to be part of such an El Paso legacy.
I was recently blessed to be contracted by Facebook to be a part of their Artist in Residence Program. They wanted me to specifically create something for the new state of the art LoneStar Cafe. . Its truly was a fantastic working with the Facebook crew as well as some of my best friends Christin Atkinson and Federico Archuleta. I was able to create this with the help of skydesign/SanFrancisco and the big man Chef Shane Bondurant. Through their vision for the Lonestar cafe, they asked me to paint a guitarist worthy of Austin and this is what I came up with. We were able to get some awesome ring details as well as guitar details in there that meant a whole lot to the people that get to see it every day. All that being said, I would not have been able to paint this with all of the badass fancy details if it weren't for my cohorts @el_federico and @saekakeeley. Thanks a bunch to Chef Shane Bondurant and the Facebook crew for making this happen.

I was contacted by my friends at the local Austin street art supply store sprATX to let me know that a company was looking for a local artist to create a campaign with. I met with a great team of individuals and got the gig. New Amsterdam Vodka chose seven main artists to represent their national #itsyourtown campaign. Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Miami, Denver, and Austin were the cities that they chose to focus on and I was chosen to represent Austin. I had to create seven original pieces as well as a mural that showcased what Austin means to me. Throughout the process, I was lucky enough to work with some of my best friends and super talented people. Thanks to Christin (Saeka) Atkinson, Benny Beyer, Kristin Freeman, Cameron Zion, and my Mom for all of your help.

Tasked with creating a mural installation on columns for Archer>Malmo, with the only direction being "perspective," Estudio Bradlio knocked this one out of the park. In about a year, the Archer Malmo office will be relocating so the design had to work independently on each column as well as be able to work as two whole murals in their new office. When you walk into the current office, you are greeted with a monotone design called "Nature Wins" that is spread across four columns. When you are leaving the creative department, you see the human nature in effect which is called "The Greatest show on earth. I asked my friend Christin Atkinson aka @SaekaArt to help me on this project, so we both took a side. We both hleped a little on each but the bulk of the concept and looks were either @bradlio1 or @saekaart.

I was tasked to create a mural for MOD Pizza. Working with their corporate creative director, Alan Guansing, we came up with the line "Enjoy The Journey." Luckily for me, they let me interpret that how I chose. I was presented with a problem in that the mural's location was in a hallway. I figured that my best bet was to design and paint something at home on a multileveled wood structure. The main pieces were cut out of Russian birch as well as the inclusion of a skateboard for the "ENJOY" part. Everything was painted with latex paint with the exception of 1-shot enamel on the skateboard. My great friend Christin (SAEKA KEELEY) Atkinson helped me paint a bunch of this one. We had fun painting the background as well.

I created the identity for the Rattle Inn

I was tasked to create a 145 ft mural for Colorado Towers in downtown Austin,Tx. I decided to get a team together, our whole idea was to play off of the "Keep Austin Weird" Tagline. Since the owners of Colorado Towers are from California, They wanted to show respect to the Austin landscape. We decided to change the idea to "Keep Austin Fresh" while still owning part of what makes Austin real ... ART. The rest of the team include Lucas Aoki, Brian Maclaskey, The red headed Mike Johnston, and Brandon Mike

Live at the Illmore
Kristin Freeman and I were tasked to create a live painting for the Illmore party during sxsw2015. Mix tail is a drink that bud light has created with celebration in mind. They wanted to pay homage to one of the illest rappers of all time; Biggie Smalls. We chose a well known photograph of him wearing a "Coogi" sweater, and decided to meld that with some old school Yo MTV Raps identity to create a mural that would ring true to the anyone who knows anything about hip hop.
