Regulations & Permits

Film Permits

Permits are required to film on Austin streets, sidewalks and alleys. There is no fee for these permits. No permit is required for filming on private property. Required permits are issued by the City of Austin, not by the Austin Film Commission. Information on City permits and City of Austin incentives and services to filmmakers can be found at the City of Austin Web site.

Film Crew

If you're looking for a local crew, check out the Austin Film Directory included in our Filmmaker Toolkit or the Texas Production Manual, found at the Texas Film Commission website. Although Texas is a right-to-work state, trade unions maintain a strong and talented presence. The statewide union organization, Local 484 Studio Mechanics, is headquartered in Austin. The Teamsters Local 657 provides drivers and rates. All recent films with a production budget of $1 million or greater were made with union crews.
