Even if your schedule is packed with SXSW activations, keynots and showcases, it’s important to take time to experience the city beyond the badge. Whether you're here for Innovation, Film & TV or Music, Austin's local gems are what make the festival unique. We've curated our favorite ways to experience the city during hte fest.

1. Savor the Local Flavor

You shouldn’t visit Austin without trying what we're most known for: barbecue and Tex-Mex. For those staying downtown, Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-QueLamberts and Iron Works BBQ offer legendary Texas brisket within walking distance of the panels. If you're looking for the ultimate Tex-Mex experience, don’t forget to order queso and margaritas. You can find low-key favorites like Polvos and Veracruz All-Natural (famous for their migas tacos) or enjoy upscale dining at La Condesa and ATX Cocina, all within walking distance of SXSW festivities.

2. Capture Iconic Street Art

Ausitn is a canvas for world-class murals and public art. Between showcases, take a quick detour to snap a photo at iconic spots like the "Greetings from Austin" mural on South First St. or the famous "i love you so much" wall at Jo's Coffee on South Congress. When you share your journey, remember to use the hashtag #TrueAustin so we can follow along with your festival highlights.

3. Discover Texas Heritage

The story of the Lone Star State is as big as Texas itself. Take a short walk up Congress Avenue to explore the Texas State Capitol, which offers free tours and stunning architecture. Nearby, the Bullock Texas State History Museum allows you to deep dive into the legends of Texas. For a different look at the city's cultural roots, head to East Austin to visit historic landmarks like the Carver Museum and experience the neighborhood's deep cultural history.

4. Step into Legendary Music Venues

SXSW brings clobal talent to our doorstep, but the venues themselves are the true stars of the Live Music Capital of the World®. While you'll catch plenty of showcases, make sure to step into the rooms that define Austin's music scene year-round. The Continental Club has been a South Congress staple since 1955, while Elephant Room offers an intimate underground jazz experience downtown. For a larger-than-life stage, visit Stubb's Bar-B-Q, or head to White Horse to experience an authentic honky-tonk and try your hand at two-stepping.

5. Explore with a Local Tour

If you only have a couple of hours between sessions, local tour companies offer creative ways to see the best of Austin in a short amount of time. You can zip through downtown on bike and segway tours, or opt for a more eclectic view of the city on an electric mini motorcycle with YourBikerGang.com. If you prefer a bit of mystery after the sun goes down, Austin Ghost Tours is a fantastic way to discover the city's spooky history under the moonlight.

6. Find the Perfect Souvenir

Treat yourself to some local shopping in the 2ND Street District or along South Congress Avenue. If you are looking for that quintessential "Keep Austin Weird" merchandise, the Visitor Center and Gift Shop is located off Congress Avenue and Fifth St. It features a curated selection of goods from local makers, ensuring you bring home something truly unique to the city.

7. Reset at Lady Bird Lake

SXSW can be a sensory overload, and the best way to recharge is to join the locals for a walk or jog on the Lady Bird Lake Hike & Bike Trail. The trail is easily accessible just across Cesar Chavez from the downtown hotels. It's the ideal spot for a quiet coffee or a relaxing glass of wine before heading back into the festival energy.
