Warehouse District
Austin Entertainment on Fourth Street
Austin's Warehouse District has grown from its industrial roots into one of the city's most dynamic and welcoming neighborhoods — a place where LGBTQ+ nightlife icons share the block with craft cocktail lounges, top-rated restaurants, live music venues, and cultural institutions. Bordered by Second Street and Congress Avenue, the district draws a diverse crowd drawn together by one thing: a great night out.
As the name suggests, many of the neighborhood's bars and restaurants occupy renovated brick warehouses, giving the area a gritty, atmospheric backdrop that sets it apart from the rest of downtown. Whether you're here for a quiet dinner, an art museum afternoon, or a late-night dance floor, the Warehouse District delivers.
Eat & Drink
Comedor, a MICHELIN-recommended modern Mexican restaurant from Chef Philip Speer is an area favorite. The glass-and-steel building opens onto a stunning courtyard, and the menu hits on every course: bone marrow tacos with smoked butter and pecan gremolata, tuna aguachile and campechano de hongos with fiery salsa are full of flavor. Hestia earned a MICHELIN Star for its live-fire cooking anchored by a custom 20-foot hearth at the center of the dining room. Chef Kevin Fink's menu shifts with what's seasonal and available; the tasting menu format is the best way to experience it. Reservations fill quickly so be sure to book early in your planning.
Fixe Southern House celebrates Chef James Robert's Louisiana roots with a progressive take on southern cuisine. His reimagined family recipes shine in the restaurant's upscale but welcoming atmosphere. Weekend brunch also draws a crowd with fluffy biscuit sandwiches, southern shrimp and grits, and chicken fried ribeye. Wu Chow brings fresh, modern Chinese food to the same building, representing all eight regional styles of Chinese cuisine, with Sunday dim sum service that's among the best in Austin.
Lonesome Dove Western Bistro anchors the Fourth Street dining corridor with Chef Tim Love's inventive American West cuisine — bold flavors, game meats, and a refined atmosphere that's been a district staple for years. Péché is the city's only dedicated absinthe bar. Cocktails get paired with French bistro-style food from escargot to seasonal plates. It has been a Warehouse District institution for well over a decade, and it remains one of the best places in downtown for a specialty cocktails alongside serious food. Swedish Hill brings the crowd-favorite Austin bakery and café into the heart of the district serving pastries, sandwiches, salads, and coffee. It's the right answer to the question of where to start a morning in the neighborhood.
Parks & Markets
Republic Square Park is a one-acre urban park and the anchor greenspace for this area of town. Grab a bagel sandwich from onsite Rosen's Bagels and picnic under the shady oaks, or stop by during events like the weekly famers marekt.
The SFC Farmers' Market Downtown happens every Saturday morning, year-round, rain or shine. With over 40 weekly vendors selling locally grown produce, pastured meats, artisan cheeses, honey, prepared foods, and more (plus live music on the plaza!). It's one of the most community-rooted Saturday morning traditions in the city.
Check the Republic Square events calendar for more activities like movie nights, yoga in the park and more.
Bars, Nightlife and Live Music
Fourth Street is home to Austin's most established LGBTQ+ nightlife, and the block remains one of the most welcoming in the city. Rain on 4th has served the LGBTQ community since 2004 as a dance club with indoor and outdoor seating, weekend DJs, and a reliably great night. Oilcan Harry's next door brings nightly entertainment and a loyal, decades-deep crowd. Highland rounds out the strip with three stories of lounge and dance space.
Beyond Fourth Street's LGBTQ anchor, the district's nightlife offerings are wide-ranging. Coconut Club delivers rooftop views and a lively crowd. Garage is one of Austin's best-kept open secrets: a stylish cocktail bar operating out of an actual parking garage attendant's office, with a vehicular-themed drinks menu. Now also serving Garage Pizza ("Sicilianish"-style, thick-crusted, from Comedor's Philip Speer) nightly.
Parker Jazz Club is one of Austin's premier clubs for local and touring jazz talent. The intimate listening room books serious musicians in a serious setting. If you get a chance to visit while the house band is playing, Kris Kimura (owner of Parker) is an extremely talented musician in his own right, and sprinkles stories about the club throughout the evening set. Nica on 4th, opened next door by the same team (Kris Kimura and Aaron Frescas, who runs Elephant Room a few blocks away), takes the jazz experience in a different direction. The 100-seat lounge is styled after a 1920s jazz club: Edison lights, intimate table seating, craft cocktails built around classics and inventive originals. It's cocktail-bar-with-jazz rather than jazz-club-with-a-bar, and the difference is the point.
