Austin Convention Center Redevelopment and Expansion

On Monday, May 22, 2023, the City of Austin released a Request For Qualifications (RFQ) for services related to the redevelopment and expansion of the Austin Convention Center. The release of the RFQ kicks off the design stage of the project. The project has been studied and planned for several years to meet the demand from larger conventions and meeting groups that desire to come to Austin. Currently, the Austin Convention Center has 376,000 square feet of rentable space. The expansion and redevelopment target is to nearly double the amount of rentable space allowing the Center to remain competitive in the marketplace.

The current project timeline estimates that building closure, demolition, and construction activities will begin in 2025 with the new, larger facility reopening in 2029. More information about the history, timeline, and links to the studies of the redevelopment of the Austin Convention Center can be found here.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Barbara Jordon Terminal West Gate Expansion

AUS has begun construction on the expansion of the Barbara Jordon Terminal on the west end to extend beyond current gates 33 and 34. This is an addition of 84,500 gross square feet over three levels: 32,000 sq ft on the concourse level, with new passenger amenities, a new 3rd level mezzanine, and apron-level airline support space.

Also included in the project scope is the replacement of 12 current gate-boarding bridges and the creation of three new gates to offset gate closures during future expansion projects.

Some of the new features in this new additional space are new hold room seating areas serving five gates, three new gates, dining areas for new concessionaires, children’s play area, new mezzanine with a public outdoor balcony and more. Construction began in the summer of 2023 and is expected to be completed in spring 2026.
