Communications Manager

Summary of Position and Duties:

  • Work with CEO, Chief Marketing Officer and other staff to develop the organizations overall communications strategy.
  • Manage strong, proactive media relations campaign to meet and/or exceed annual goals as well as to promote Visit Austin, our mission and our stakeholders.
  • Draft and execute communications programs and policies for Visit Austin.
  • Maintain Crisis Communications Plan and serve a key role in its execution, as needed.
  • Serve as a copywriter on all corporate communication including speeches, talking points, annual meeting, annual report.
  • Provide media preparation support to executive leadership, including research and message development.
  • Serve as a media spokesperson for Visit Austin and as primary liaison with media.
  • Organize and schedule media interviews for appropriate Visit Austin or hospitality industry personnel; provide media preparation support.
  • Have knowledge of Austin history, attractions and offerings as a convention and tourism destination; serve as knowledgeable and well-informed contact for media requests.
  • Draft and distribute pitches and news releases to local, regional and national and select international markets. Follow up on media inquiries/leads by telephone, email, social media or other personal correspondence.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local media to provide support for news reports pertinent to the hospitality industry and Visit Austin operations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with regional, national and international print, broadcast and online leisure travel journalists.
  • Secure coverage of Austin in national conventions/meetings and travel trade publications.
  • Develop and maintain local, regional and national and international media lists using an online database; track editorial coverage online and report to supervisors.
  • Write and compile media kits, including news releases, fact sheets, historical materials, economic impact reports, photographic and/or videos, and other necessary research to generate editorial coverage of Austin.
  • Organize and host domestic and international media visits and group press trips. Duties include accompanying journalists/writers on tours, planning itineraries, securing complimentary or discounted accommodations, meals, transportation and entertainment options when appropriate.
  • Plan and host press tours for pre-qualified journalists in conjunction with Texas Tourism and Brand USA.
  • Attend select conventions, trade shows and/or conferences to promote Austin to news media and represent Austin in the community.
  • Keep staff and partners apprised of key media placements.
  • Assist Supervisors with preparation of annual budget and marketing plans.
  • Prepare monthly expense report and donated services report from press trips and site visits.
  • Provide communications support to all Visit Austin departments.
  • Maintain media database in a CRM system.
  • Co-supervise Film and Communications Coordinator.

Key Qualifications and Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • A passion for Austin.
  • Minimum five years of experience in public relations/communications field. Travel and tourism industry a plus.
  • Experience working and communicating with local and state government officials.
  • Experience serving as a media spokesperson.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite and database management and media tracking programs . 
  • Flexible schedule required (after-hours and weekends).
  • Experience with results-driven programs.
  • Account management and development experience.
  • Effective time management and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent written, spelling, grammatical, proofreading and oral skills.

Convention Services Coordinator

We have an immediate opening for a customer service-oriented individual with excellent communication skills, strong office/clerical skills and a general knowledge of Austin and the hospitality industry.  This full time, non-exempt, hourly position serves as support to the Convention Services department.

Qualified individuals should possess good organizational and communication skills and a proven ability to take direction and work well under pressure. Desired experience includes customer service, strong written and verbal communication and a variety of clerical tasks. Important personal traits are the ability to take initiative and work with little supervision, to manage multiple tasks and projects, to meet deadlines and to learn quickly.

Required: Computer expertise with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. High school diploma or the equivalent and 2 years of office experience.

CRM Specialist, Convention Sales

Visit Austin has an immediate opening in the Convention Sales Department for a CRM Specialist, who will focus on serving as CRM administrator and engaging industry partners with the CRM’s extranet platform.

Responsibilities include management of CRM data input for all departments and serving as the internal and external expert in CRM partner account maintenance.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferred, along with 3+ years’ experience working with database management and/or business analysis, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of a travel-related industry is a plus. Candidate must possess excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills and computer competency. The ability to learn quickly, take initiative, work with little supervision and manage multiple tasks and deadlines are critical personal characteristics.
